Shawnee Forest Country

Sometimes referred to as “the Little Grand Canyon”– and “Like No Other Place in Illinois” Shawnee National Forest is truly unique. It has a 4.5 out of 5 star travel rating on Trip Advisor,  with people’s positive comments about rock formations, amazing hiking trails, wineries, camping and more. In addition,  The Shawnee Hills Wine Trail is in Southern Illinois, home to a dozen wineries.

Operated by the U.S.D.A. Forest Service, the Shawnee National Forest is one of 155 national forests nationwide. It is the only national forest in Illinois, and the single largest publicly owned body of land in Illinois. It will connect you with the natural world through its 280,000 acres of magnificent scenery and terrain. Enjoy some of the most amazing hiking and camping while also being part of one of the most unique natural and cultural heritages of southern Illinois. The earliest settlers were concentrated along the major waterways of the area. Within the Shawnee National Forest you will find opportunities to connect with the natural world, including the following:

 

  • Seven Congressionally – designated Wilderness Areas (over 10% of the Forest)
